CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Nate "Near" River
Age: 19
Canon: Death Note
Canon Point: End of the manga, not including the one-shot.

Character Information: Unfortunately, the wiki is missing a good chunk of the story in his history section, so I've written my own version here.

Personality: If Near and Mello are like two halves of the original L, then Near encapsulates both his childishness and his cold nature. It's hard to take someone seriously when they divulge their latest conclusion while crouched on the floor playing with transformers, but this is exactly what Near does.

He likes all manner of toys and games, from darts to puzzles to stacking cards and anything in between. He surrounds himself with playthings and crawls around in his pajamas. Much like L, he gets away with these eccentricities because he can solve what others can't. Though compared to Near, L's habits are practically normal. He takes the stacking habit to the extreme, filling a room with mountains of dice, matches, cards, or whatever else he can get his hands on. He paints figures and small puppets to look like the individuals in his cases, using them to explain the details to others.

Unlike Mello, Near keeps his emotions tightly in check - though it seems to be something that comes naturally to him rather than anything he has to struggle with. He keeps himself detached from others and he's calmer and more stable than L ever was. This doesn't mean that he doesn't care for others in his own way, but he doesn't do much in the way of expressing it. He works on the side of the law because that's what L does. It's what he was raised to do. But he's not a nice person. In fact, he tends to view solving cases like solving a complicated puzzle rather than bringing about justice for the victimized. He's devious and he isn't above using tactics that are barely within the law. According to the creators, Near is the smartest character "because he cheats".

Ironically, and despite being one of L's chosen successors, Near doesn't really care much for L as a person. He goes out of his way to make his L finger puppet and mask ugly. L lost in his battle with Kira, and for that Near says he's nothing more than a loser. Though it's easy to believe he would hold himself to the same standards, which is why he's determined not to also fail. Despite this, he still holds some manner of respect for L, and once he has the position himself he decides to choose cases in a similar manner. As he mentions in the post series one-shot, L only worked on cases that interested him, so Near does the same. He is, however, fond of Mello. Even though his rival doesn't want anything to do with him, Near would work with the blond easily if he asked. It's a respect derived from their rivalry that L never earned.

Though he always seems confident about himself, he's not all that great when it comes to actual social interaction. He spends most of his time holed away in his hideout, only journeying outside when moving locations becomes necessary. When flying to Japan he asked to be accompanied by Rester because he had no experience with traveling first class on a plane. He's not embarrassed about this fact. In his position interaction with random strangers isn't necessary. He has his enemies and he has those he's chosen to work with. Everyone else is simply background noise. However, without any of his chosen support he has a more difficult time displaying his deductive skills.
